Explore the outdoors on Black River. Without the crowds.

Only two stays booked at a time on 35 acres. No crowded loops. No noise. Just space.
Your own climate-controlled indoor bathroom, with fresh towels and handmade soap that's locally made.
Star-filled skies, crackling fires, and nature’s soundtrack—no generators, no traffic.
Firewood, grill, fuel, chairs, picnic table—set up and waiting.
"Dark Sky" locations that offer exceptional stargazing are gaining popularity in this era of high tech. Like those locations, we also protect our view of the night sky here, so you'll have an exceptional starscape with more viewable stars than most places. We'll keep you updated on the latest things to see in the night sky during your visit.
Request a Dark Sky Tour* and we'll have a telescope set up and ready for you at the best time for stargazing.
*weather permitting.
We believe time outdoors should feel like a deep breath—not a logistics project. And the noise you hear should be nature's soundtrack -- not generators. That's why we created this unique retreat from the bright lights and chatter of modern life with the creature comforts you appreciate.
We invite you to unplug, slow down, and find your perfect perch.
Wake to birdsong drifting through the trees.
Sip coffee as mist lifts from the meadow.
Walk quiet forest trails.
Float in clear water.
Read. Nap. Wander. Wonder.
As evening falls, light your fire. Watch the stars appear. Listen to frogs, owls, and crickets tell their stories.
No schedule. No crowds. No stress.
Just you—exactly where you’re meant to be.
Quietly Close to It All
We are located in Black, Missouri, on a private stretch of the Black River surrounded by forest and Missouri's best natural attractions:
🌿Johnson Shut-ins State Park (only 15 minutes away!)
🌿 Elephant Rocks State Park
🌿 Taum Sauk Mountain State Park
🌿 Caledonia Antique Village
🌿 Arcadia Valley Roasting Company (the BEST coffee)
🌿 Shepherd Mountain Bike Park
Explore as much—or as little—as you like. Then return to your own quiet corner of the forest.

(feel free to call, text or email with any others)
Our guests access the river via private property. You may occasionally see neighbors (especially on holiday weekends), but it is MUCH quieter than public areas. It is quite common to have the beach entirely to yourself, particularly on weekdays.
Cell service is minimal/intermittent. WIFI is available in selected areas on property.
All reservations include: gas grill with fuel, picnic table, fire pit, and comfortable Adirondack-style chairs. Best of all, you'll be assigned a private, temperature controlled bathroom with fresh towels and handmade, locally-sourced soap.
We are unable to host pets at this time. This is for the protection of the many animals in our neighborhood.
We ask for 30 days notice of cancelation for a refund of deposit. We reserve the right to deduct a $50 cancelation fee.
We only lease to individuals aged 25 and older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from individuals under the age of 18. We will verify age upon arrival prior to the stay.
There's only one rule: Be Kind. Be kind to each other, to fellow guests, and to the land. That means no loud music, no bright lights after 8pm (prime stargazing time), and no ATVs or UTVs. In return, you'll hear owls, hawks, crickets, and more varieties of frogs than you knew existed — including our resident tree frog namesake, Calvin T. Frog himself. We reserve the right to end any stay without refund if this spirit isn't honored. All guests are welcome and safe here.

If you love sleeping under the stars but still want a hot shower with all the amenities, this is the option for you. We'll have all this set up and waiting when you arrive:
Best for: Tent campers who want the simplicity that keeps them closest to the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. But, you still appreciate a hot shower, fresh towels, and some "creature comforts." Situated in a perfectly shady location surrounded by beautiful pine trees, you can pitch your tent on the soft forest floor and soak in the forest ambiance. There's no better way to enjoy our dark skies. This isn't just camping — it's forest bathing.

Perched high in the trees, this is a cozy spot for curious adventurers who want something out of the ordinary but still want some of their creature comforts. Inside you’ll find:
Best for: Couples who want a unique adventure with a perch up in the trees. You'll love the view as you sip your morning coffee and watch the sun rise. Take your picture with the grandaddy pine tree built into the deck. Then hop down back to your gas grill, fire pit + firewood, Adirondack chairs and picnic table.

Our property comes to life differently in each season. Each has its own unique beauty to appreciate.
Our two rentals face a beautiful flowering meadow preserve with a multitude of different flowers that bloom throughout the seasons. In the spring, you'll see an abundance of redbuds and dogwoods sprinkled liberally throughout the forest surrounding this meadow.
In the summer, swimming in the crystal clear Black River via private property access is a highlight. And if the weather is right, a large patch of wild blackberries are flowering to ripen during a few special weeks in summer. The garden begins producing in June, and we share whatever is in season with you when you arrive.
Fall brings crisp air and bright foliage with oaks and maples scattered through our 35 acres of forest. We also have a beautiful pumpkin arch to celebrate the harvest season.

Available by reservation for $39/pp. Reserve your spot for a delicious breakfast featuring locally sourced honey!
We are lucky to have a Master Beekeeper with an apiary adjacent to our property. He will set up a short demonstration to show you how honey is harvested. He will also share information about our approach to supporting pollinators, including bees.
You'll learn how to attract and support these important members of the food system in your own yard. You'll also get to see a hive setup (don't worry -- no bees) and learn how the bees build comb and store honey.
We'll have time for Q&A, so you you'll have a chance to ask our beekeeper your specific questions.
Pollinators are so important to helping grow the food we all eat, and we love sharing about it.
